The Spider Man Wall Sculpture statue represents, to my best knowledge, one of the first Bowen pieces devoted to Marvel's characters. Sculpted by Randy Bowen and released in 1995 with an edition size of 4500 samples, the statue was made of porcelain and came with a COA (Certificate Of Authenticity) in a rather unsophisticated packaging, essentially constituted by separate foam blocks surrounding the piece. The character is depicted on a vertical wall of bricks in a rather typical pose, with both feet and right hand well stuck to the wall (thanks to the well known hero's powers) and the left arm fully elongated with the hand in the classic launching-spider stance. The body is slender and elegant, with well defined muscles on chest and legs, a thin waistline and a charming contour of legs and arms. Many details of the sculpt in this old statue reveal the innate talent of Randy Bowen: the tasteful design of the hand launching the spider and the naturalness of the hand resting on the wall, the well-proportioned bulges of muscles on shoulders and back, the perfect outline of the mask on nose and chin and, in general, the great realism and elegance of the whole figure. As usual for many of these early pieces, the main weak point is the painting. Although the red and blue tonalities used for the costume are very fine and faithful to Comics, their appearance is rather unprofessional: the shades look uneven, the contours are not perfect and, moreover, the spider design on suit is just carved. As said, the base represents a trapezoidal wall on which the design of the many, small bricks somehow simulates a perspective view; the bottom of the base is smooth and includes a centered hole which clearly suggests the piece was designed to be exposed hanging from a wall, just like a painting. To be honest, I have a special fondness for this statue: in spite of the limited size (smaller than the usual 1:6 scale of Bowen pieces), its own fragility and the raw coloring, I think it is a very elegant piece and a true piece of history for this hobby: in other words, a sort of precursor of all, wonderful statues devoted to this flag-character of the Marvel Universe.
